Black Welsh Mountain wool is a distinctive, heritage-breed fiber known for its deep natural colour, durable handle, and springy texture. It is highly prized by hand spinners and weavers for outerwear and traditional Welsh textiles.

Key characteristics of Black Welsh Mountain include:

  • Colour: Rich, true black, sometimes with natural chocolate-brown undertones or sun-bleached reddish tips. It requires no dyeing and can be blended with white wool to create natural tweeds and grays.
  • Micron Count: 24–36 microns, classifying it as a medium to coarse wool.
  • Staple Length: 2–4 inches (5–10 cm).
  • Texture & Crimp: Firm, crisp, and bouncy. The fibers have an open crimp that makes the resulting yarn excellent for trapping air and retaining warmth.
  • Purity: Unlike some other mountain breeds, it is remarkably free of coarse, brittle hairs (kemp).
